The short version
Simpler Recipes takes a recipe link and gives you back just the recipe. You do not need an account. Recipes you extract are kept on your device unless you choose to share them. We do not sell or share personal information.
What happens when you paste a link
The URL you submit is sent to our server, which fetches the page and pulls out the recipe (ingredients, steps, times, source). The cleaned-up recipe is:
- Kept in your browser (local storage) so you can reopen it from “Recent”. It is not uploaded to us unless you share it.
- Cached on our server for up to 7 days, keyed by the URL, so the next person who pastes the same link gets an instant result. The cache holds the extracted recipe, not anything about you.
When we use AI
Most sites publish structured recipe data and we read it directly — no AI involved. When a page has no structured data, we send the page’s text (never anything about you) to Anthropic’s Claude API to pull out the recipe. Anthropic’s API does not use that content to train models. This fallback is the only part of the service with a per-person limit.
Cookies and local storage
We use a few functional cookies and browser storage. None are for advertising or cross-site tracking.
- A random token cookie used only to count AI-fallback extractions for people without an account.
- If you sign in, a session cookie so the server can recognise you.
- Local storage for your recent recipes, ingredient/step check-offs, saved recipes, meal plan and pantry.
- A theme preference (light/dark).
Accounts (optional)
You can use everything without an account. If you create one (Google sign-in or an email magic link, via Supabase), we store your email address and sync your saved recipes, meal plan and pantry so they follow you across devices. Signed-in users also get a larger monthly allowance of AI extractions. Email us to delete your account and everything synced with it.
Sharing
If you tap Share on an extracted recipe, a copy of that recipe is stored on our server and gets a public link (/r/…). Anyone with the link can view it. Shared recipes are kept for up to one year and are marked so search engines do not index them. Curated recipes on this site are already public.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics for aggregate usage (page views, general location, device type). It loads after the page is idle and can be blocked with any content blocker or the Google Analytics opt-out add-on without affecting the site.
What we do not collect
- Payment information — the service is free.
- Your browsing history — we only see the URLs you choose to paste.
- Advertising or tracking cookies.
Browser extension
The Simpler Recipes browser extension reads recipe data (schema.org markup) from the page you are on, entirely on your device. It only runs when you click its icon and does not send data to us or to anyone else.
Third parties we rely on
- Vercel — hosting and the server-side cache.
- Supabase — accounts and synced data (only if you sign in).
- Anthropic — AI extraction fallback (page text only).
- Google Analytics — aggregate usage statistics.
Your rights
Everything kept in your browser can be removed by clearing site data for simpler.recipes. To delete an account, its synced data, or a shared recipe you created, email us and we will sort it out.
